We fully support the Government’s objective to improve healthy eating in schools. The food that we offer is therefore fully compliant with Government standards and we will have implemented with the new nutritional standards well before the target date.
But offering healthy food is but a first step. Only one-third of secondary school students currently use school catering. The majority are bringing in packed lunches or buying from local shops - most of whom are buying crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks and other junk food.
We therefore focus on uptake as much as on the food that is served. We attract students back to school catering. Then, and only then, can we work with the school to encourage students to make healthier choices.
We have been successful in both these objectives. That is why Ofsted, when they inspected one of our schools, reported that our approach had given a real boost to healthy eating.
The fact that we double or treble uptake – and offer healthy food at the same time – is something that very few school caterers have been able to achieve.
